Our Homing Process

Barley Greyhound Sanctuary Homing Process

We have lots of lovely Greyhounds here searching for their forever homes and details on each of them can be found on the ‘Our Hounds’ section of our website. Here at Barley Greyhound Sanctuary we pride ourselves in responsible rehoming and being there for adopters and their Greyhounds throughout the dogs life.

  • We carry out a home visit before allowing the dogs to leave our care, this isn't anything to worry about, we just like to check that your home is a safe environment for a Greyhound and that the Greyhound you have chosen will fit in. We can also answer any questions you may have.

  • We do rehome to people with children of all ages as long as the children are sensible and respect the dogs personal space and providing the right Greyhound match can be found. Most Greyhounds are known for being fantastic with children but like any breed they will have a breaking point if tormented by a child.

  • We do rehome to people who work depending on each individual situation, we will talk to adopters in more detail about their working hours when they enquire about adopting. Greyhounds are not used to being left alone so time off work will be required during the settling in period.

  • Gardens must be fully secure with no gaps in the fencing or hedgerow. We prefer gardens to have at least 6ft fencing but we do consider lower fences depending on the surroundings of the garden and based on the individual temperament of each dog.

  • We do consider homing to flats / apartments, preferably with a garden, but we will consider flats without gardens or homes with communal gardens providing the right Greyhound can be found for the individual environment and access is safe for a Greyhound (most Greyhounds aren't used to stairs but many get used to them with patience and training).

Greyhounds make amazing pets and with understanding they usually adapt very quickly into home life but they are a unique breed with a prey drive so we advise that you do some research into the breed first. We are happy to help with any questions you may have. You can find out more about Greyhounds as pets here - www.barleykennels.co.uk/care

Although you may see a particular dog on our website or Facebook page that you like please come to the kennels with an open mind as we like to try and match the right dog to the right person depending on their circumstances. Every dog in our care is deserving of a loving forever home so please do not to choose on colour but on their individual personality and suitability to your lifestyle. All our dogs are neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, will go home with lead, house collar, muzzle, 4kg bag of kibble, teddy, Dorwest supplement, 4 weeks free insurance, information pack and a lifetime of support and back up. You can find out full details about our Adoption Pack options here - Our Adoption Packs — Barley Greyhound Sanctuary (barleykennels.co.uk)

Homing Process:

Step 1: Once you have decided a Greyhound may be the right breed for you please fill in our pre-adoption questionnaire (found on our website here - www.barleykennels.co.uk/adoption ). We will then contact you to arrange a visit to meet the dogs and chat to our staff in more detail. Please be completely honest with us as it is important you are found the right Greyhound for your home / lifestyle.

STEP 2: Visit the kennels, meet the dogs that may be suitable for you and chat to staff who can answer any questions you may have (you can do this more than once) If you fall in love with your potential forever friend and we feel they are the right match for your lifestyle you can reserve them.

STEP 3: We will arrange a home visit and give give you an information pack to read through.

STEP 4: As long as all goes well with the home visit then you are ready to take your Greyhound home once you've read through and filled in the adoption agreement / paperwork. We'll also show you how to fit your Greyhounds lead and muzzle correctly.

Please note a donation is also required - the minimum donation is £200.

We like to keep in touch with all the dogs we home and we do carry out follow up checks. We have a dedicated Facebook group where Barley adopters can share photos, stories and ask for / share advise. We are here for help and support throughout the lifetime of the dog.

If for ANY reason you can't keep the dog whether it be after 2 weeks or 10 years we ALWAYS take them back into our care. This is so we can ensure that they are rehomed to another suitable home with all back up and support in place.

We are based in Essex and home across the Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, North London & North Kent areas. We also have homecheckers/volunteers in the Peterborough, South Lincolnshire, Suffolk and Norfolk areas so adoptions are possible in these areas too providing potential adopters are willing to visit us.

We look forward to hearing from you.
