Correct Weight for a Greyhound

We get asked a lot by adopters and also see lots of posts on social media regarding Greyhounds weight so I thought I'd share some photos as a guide to help those who may be concerned about their dogs weight.

Obviously there are sometimes reasons why a dog may be slightly underweight or overweight due to medical conditions, age, or fussiness. This is just a bit of guidance in pictures for retired Greyhound owners.

If you feel your dog is underweight or overweight and there is no underlying problems causing it then you should adjust their food accordingly to help them put on or lose weight (if they are losing weight for seemingly no reason then make sure they are up to date with worming treatment and book to see your vet if worming doesn't help).

It’s important that your dog has a balanced and heathy diet to help maintain a good weight. You can find more information about feeding here - Feeding a balanced diet to your Greyhound — Barley Greyhound Sanctuary (barleykennels.co.uk)

Below are photos to show Greyhounds at the correct weight, underweight and overweight.

Your Greyhounds racing weight can also help as a good guide and can easily be found using their racing name (You can join the ‘Your Greyhounds History’ Facebook group for help with finding your dogs history and weight etc.

(Please note that the underweight hounds pictured below are now fit, healthy and living in their forever homes).
